What is Kuchipudi Dance?
Kuchipudi originates from Andhra Pradesh, India. Graceful movements, rhythmic footwork, expressive storytelling (abhinaya), and dramatic presentation are its signature features. Principles of the dance were established in the ancient treatise, Natya Shastra, which enshrines the foundations of Indian classical dance, music and drama.
Kuchipudi is traditionally attributed to the 17th-century saint and scholar, Siddhendra Yogi. Inspired by stories of Lord Krishna and the Vaishnava philosophy, he shaped Kuchipudi into a devotional dance-drama tradition. It evolved from a performance by male artists into a beautiful solo dance form widely performed by female dancers across the world.
Unique Features of Kuchipudi
Tarangam—a performance where the dancer balances and dances on the rim of a brass plate while executing complex rhythmic patterns, is a most mesmerising aspect of Kuchipudi. This requires exceptional control, balance and mastery of technique, making it one of the most admired elements in the Kuchipudi repertoire.
Aabhinaya (expression) – where dancers bring stories and characters to life through facial expressions, hand gestures, and body language, makes Kuchipudi both technically intricate and emotionally engaging
